HISTORY by Katelyn - Member of 1st Robotics Team
How did we start? Well, Kevin and Bryan went to a robotics camp they heard about from a friend. They enjoyed the camp and began thinking that maybe one day they could compete as their own team. That day came in 2008. They wanted to expand their team so they asked Jason, Garrett, and Katelyn to join them. The California Academy of Math and Science (CAMS) High School in Carson became their mentors and they learned about competing in robotics competitions. So, the building began and their new creation was a robot named Kamikaze II.
At the first competition, the team made it to the final rounds and placed 1st! With this win they were able to advance to the 2008 Championship of the Americas in Omaha, Nebraska. With the help of fundraisers from the St. Luke parish they were able to travel to the competition and competed for the second time. After 4 days, they made it to the finals. The finals were intense, but in the end they took 1st place!
With this courage, they decided to compete in the Championship of the World Competition in Dallas, Texas. St. Luke parish helped them fundraise again along with help from Father Joe Wah. Enough money was raised to travel to the competition with Father Joe at their side to bless them. They met many people from different states and even from different countries.
The competitions began and they competed against high schools and middle schools. They fought the best they could and moved to the finals where they advanced to the championship round and placed 2nd IN THE WORLD, with their mentors, from CAMS high school, as their alliances! They started thinking about the next year’s competition. Since they did so well, they thought...why not bring it to their own school?
Garrett and Kevin had graduated from St. Luke School and were off to high school, but Jason, Bryan, and Katelyn continued with robotics. They began a team at St. Luke for the next competition. Mrs. Desy, the computer teacher at St. Luke, generously offered to be the advisor of the wonderful robotics teams beginning in 2009. She was very helpful and generous to donate her own time, to advise all of our teams. They formed 3 teams and competed in many competitions. Jason was captain of team A, Katelyn was captain of team B, and Bryan was captain of team C. In 2009 at a local competition, all 3 teams placed 2nd allowing them to advance to the America’s competition again and travel to Nebraska with the help of fundraisers.
The 5th graders on the team competed in a 5th grade competition in Nebraska called Crazy Cube. Bryan’s team ended up taking 1st in America! The other teams also received awards. Bryan’s team then advanced to the World competition in Texas, where they fought hard and beat many other teams from all over the world.
St. Luke robotics team looks forward to any new members that would like to join for the next year’s competition. They had a great run and will continue their skills next year. Good Luck next year, St. Luke Robotics Team.
